Hospital Infections

Most people visit the hospital expecting treatment for their medical problem; very few visit the hospital expecting to acquire a new medical problem. However, this has rapidly become a growing problem in hospitals across the nation.

Hospitals are full of bacteria and viruses - some of which are deadly. In a clean, well kept environment, these invaders should not pose a horrific threat to newcomers. But unsanitary practices - such as hospital staff failing to wash their hands and change gloves between patients - are commonly becoming a very real threat to hospital patients.

Statistics from the Center for Disease Control indicate that over 2 million hospital infections occur each year - 90,000 of which result in death. These numbers have consistently been on the rise, as hospitals have not been taking the steps necessary to create a healthier environment for their patients. In 2009, Medicare stopped covering mistakes and infections acquired during a hospital visit.
