Merck Manual Online Medical LIbrary
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a painful, disabling, and potentially deadly skin disease that is usually caused by a reaction to certain drugs. Another form of the disease is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), also often caused by a drug reaction. Allergic reaction to medication is the leading cause of SJS.
The following nonsteroidal anti-flammatory drugs have been linked to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a very serious and sometimes deadly skin disorder:
Bextra is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Bextra was used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Bextra was also used to treat painful menstruation.
BEXTRA RECALL: Pfizer, Inc., the maker of Bextra, pulled the drug from the market in April 2005 at the request of the FDA. Bextra was associated with serious and life threatening adverse events including:
Celebrex is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Celebrex is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex is also used to treat painful menstruation.
Clinoril (Sulindac) is used for the treatment of pain and inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, acute gouty arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
Vioxx® is a painkiller that was used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis including some forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), migraine headaches, and other types of pain in adults.
VIOXX RECALL: Merck & Co. Inc., the maker of Vioxx, pulled the drug from the market in September 2004 after Vioxx was linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes among long-term users. Several lawsuits have been brought against the drug maker, many of them settling just recently.
Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) is used for the treatment of pain and inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, acute gouty arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
